What to do when hair boredom strikes?

I Need a Change!

Had the same ‘do forever? Want a change? Great! Now, how to figure out what will work for you….

Yes, your hairstylist can and will help. But, it's best to have a starting point. Doing your homework up front will ensure you get the result you want. Straight from our experts, here are some tips and tricks (in no particular order) to finding your perfect new look.

1) This probably goes without saying - check out fashion magazines from this season to see what is hot, and what is not.

2) For even more pictures, try the online version of your favorite magazine.

3) Hair product lines have terrific web sites to showcase their particular looks. Lines such as Bumble and Bumble or Oribe (both carried at Sorella) are great starting points.

4) Foreign magazines – especially those dedicated to hair - are a wonderful way to find something up and coming, and just a little bit different. You can find these in book stores such as Barnes and Noble or a good old fashioned news-stand. Try magazines from Japan, Europe or the UK!

5) With respect to color – if you want a natural look, try looking at a photo of yourself when you were a small child – you, only younger and fresher. Like it? Bring it in!

6) Be realistic about how much time and money you want to spend on your new look. Communicate that to your stylist, so they can help you eliminate the choices that aren’t right for you. You will want to think about how much time you want to take each day, as well as how much time you want to spend in your stylist’s chair.

7) Bring all your information to your stylist for an in-depth discussion. Be sure to book a little extra time (or come in for a separate 15 minute consultation ahead of time – complimentary at Sorella) in order to be sure you are not rushed.

8) Using celebrities as inspiration is common, but can be challenging. Remember, their business is to look perfect, and most have spent years refining their style – or have someone like Rachel Zoe to make it look like they did. Ashley B. (from our Kirkland location) has this suggestion, “put your thumb over the celebrities’ face – do you still like the hair style?” If the answer is yes, it goes into the file, if not, move on!

9) Be honest about what your hair will do. Some cuts and styles will only work with certain types of hair lengths or textures. Try not to get your heart too set on something unless you are sure these factors are a match!

10) How much versatility do you want or need? Do you attend a lot of formal events where an updo is preferable? Do you want to be able to wear it in a pony tail most of the time? Discuss how you wear your hair and will want to wear it with your stylist before settling on your plan of action.

Per Andrea (Issaquah stylist and an Artistic Director here at Sorella), a stylist’s goal is, “to balance your individual sense of fashion, with your lifestyle”.

So help us, help you, to find your perfect look. Change is good (especially if you plan for it first)!
